After a relatively quiet August, Amazon Prime Video (US) is bringing plenty of new goodies to the table for September. This includes six new ‘Original’ series and films from Amazon’s own production studios, a trio of big 2019 Hollywood releases surprisingly added within an Amazon subscription rather than as rent/buy extras, and a collection of 1970s classics.
Kicking off with the new Amazon Originals, the highlight has to be season two of hit super anti-hero show, The Boys. Each episode will be screened weekly in 4K and HDR weekly from September 4, and finds the team of vigilantes continuing to take on corrupted superheroes in what Amazon declares will be an even ‘more intense, more insane’ series than the first.
Season 2 of The Boys arrives on Amazon Prime on September 4.

Also sounding pretty out there is Get Duked!. Written and directed by acclaimed music video/short film maker Ninian Doff, and starring comedian Eddie Izzard, Get Duked! tells the tale of two teenage pals from Glasgow who head off the beaten track on a camping trip and end up hunted by a shadowy force hell-bent on extinguishing their futures. The results are described as “an anarchic satire of generational politics, hip-hop loving farmers and hallucinogenic rabbit droppings…” All of this, droppings included, is available in HDR now (having debuted on August 28).
Continuing the ‘high concept’ theme, Utopia makes its debut on September 25. This new series is pitched as a conspiracy thriller in which fans of an elusive comedian find out that his predictions of the end of the world are real. With star power in the shape of John Cusack and Rainn Wilson, and high 4K and HDR production values, Amazon seems to have high hopes for this one.
Getting into more real life territory, soccer/football fans have a new season of Amazon’s All Or Nothing sports documentaries to look forward to. This time the subject is Tottenham Hotspur football club from the English Premier League, and takes in everything from the arrival of Jose Mourinho as the club’s new manager to the development of the 62,000-seat stadium; dealing with the COVID-19 outbreak; and the club’s community outreach work. This new show is available from August 31.
Judy relies maybe a bit too much on an Oscar-pitched performance from Renee Zellweger.

With the US election looming large, Amazon is delving into politics from September 18 with All In: The Fight For Democracy. This looks at the issue of voter suppression in the US and the barriers to voting that the documentary claims represent a threat to voters “basic rights as citizens of the United States”. This will be available in HDR but not, it seems, 4K.
Last but hopefully not least on the Originals front is Dino Dana: The Movie. This family film follows on from the popular TV series about a young girl who loves dinosaurs so much she’s able to imagine them into real life. Dana fans can look out for this from September 4.
Heading up the non-Amazon Original additions for September is a trio of 2019 ‘big Hollywood’ movies: Gemini Man, The Addams Family, and Judy. The first is a flashy but dumb sci-fi thriller about an aging Will Smith being hunted by a younger version of himself that marks the latest step in once-great director Ang Lee’s recent downward trajectory. The Addams Family is a rather strange animated take on the classic family of spooky oddballs that seems to not really understand its subject matter, while Judy gives us a fairly conventional take on the life of Judy Garland that relies/focuses a bit too much for comfort on the performance of Renee Zellweger in the titular role.
Close Encounters Of The Third Kind arrives on September 1.

Some of the new 1970s collection are genuine big hitters. Especially Steven Spielberg’s UFO epic Close Encounters Of The Third Kind; epic weepy Kramer Vs Kramer starring Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep; eternally watchable The Graduate, starring Hoffman again, with Anne Bancroft (this film actually came out in 1967, but who’s counting…); The Mechanic, best known for making Charles Bronson a star; and, if you’re feeling brave, horror maestro Wes Craven’s controversial writer/director debut, The Last House On The Left.
Other library title stand outs on the list of films being added to Amazon Prime would be Daniel Craig’s excellent Bond debut, Casino Royale; Tom Waits’ awesome concert film, Big Time; Robin Williams/Nathan Lane comedy drama The Birdcage; and the pretty decent 2008 reboot of Rambo - directed by Rambo himself, Sylvester Stallone.
Here’s the full list of everything Amazon is adding to its Prime platform in September:

Reflecting On A Unique Subway Series Between The New York Mets And New York Yankees

Since Dave Mlicki ushered in the “Subway Series” with a completely unexpected complete-game shutout at Yankee Stadium way back on June 16, 1997, the Yankees and Mets have experienced their share of notable moments, including an occasional doubleheader in two ballparks that may or may not have featured a certain Yankee pitcher (Roger Clemens) intentionally throwing up and in at a certain Mets’ Hall of Fame catcher (Mike Piazza), depends on who you believe.
They also played five competitive World Series games in 2000, with the Yankees winning in five, though not before getting a tougher challenge then they did in 1998 and 1999 from the Padres and Braves respectively.
It is difficult to gauge how these Subway Series games will be remembered. Perhaps someday we will tell people how the Mets and Yankees played five games in a span of three days, all in front of no fans and a small media gathering and with piped in noise. Or perhaps we will mention the surreal and bizarre nature of four games being seven innings with the Mets twice being the home team in the Bronx.
However these games get described in future memories, we can say they each had compelling storylines over the duration of 15 hours with 1,268 pitches thrown by 31 different pitchers.
Friday featured the Mets taking the field less than 24 hours after a poignant moment when they held a 42-second moment of silence for Jackie Robinson before walking off the field in protest, a moment that came after Dominic Smith emotionally spoke about racism and social injustice on Wednesday when postponements throughout sports started occurring in protest.

Of course Smith’s poignant moment came after the infamous hot mic incident from GM Brodie Van Wagonen, who then saw both Fred (not Fredd) and Jeff (not Geoff) Wilpon blast him in separate press releases while misspelling his name (Brody) in the second paragraph, a move that could come out of the George Steinbrenner playbook of referring to Buck Showalter as “Bucky”.
Once the Mets took the field Friday, it was an emotional scene when Smith factored significantly into the game, hitting the go-ahead drive off Chad Green when the Mets slugged three homers in a five-batter span to cop a 6-4 victory.
The next surreal moment took place Friday night for the first of two Met home games in the Bronx. That meant the Mets would have a chance to get a walk off win if they didn’t get control of the game in the first six innings.
And they did, getting a game-winning homer from Amed Rosario off Aroldis Chapman. Except it was the seventh inning, not in their own ballpark and as the home team. It was so surreal that both players later conceded to not realizing the game was over due to the new doubleheader rules, which have prompted fierce debates in some social media circles.

Game Three was the only normal game in terms of appearance. You knew there would be nine innings regardless of how the teams got there.
And for the Yankees, they got there by getting a big-time outing from J.A. Happ, the same person who openly wondered about a lack of work being tied to a $17 million vesting option for next season. He didn’t say it that way, but if you listened or read what he was saying you got the idea.
This time, Happ got the Yankees into the eighth inning and then managing struck. In a game with little hard contact, manager Aaron Boone pulled him for Adam Ottavino and with that Happ’s chance at a win ended when Wilson Ramos clanged a pitch off the left field foul pole.
Still the Yankees overcame the questionable decision, mostly because Dellin Betances’ velocity is not what it was and he was apparently pitching hurt. They snapped their seven-game skid when Erik Kratz tried to bunt but Betances threw a high fastball that went for a wild pitch and Clint Frazier to score, ensuring the Yankees avoided their first eight-game skid since 1995 and avoided any possibility of their first nine-game skid since 1982 when they tried to become the “Bronx Burners” only to finish 79-83 and usher in Billy 3.
Clint Frazier scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch to beat the Mets on Aug. 29.

Then came Sunday, the Mets seemingly had the series secure, taking a five-run lead into the seventh. Then came the bullpen, a source of angst for Mets fans since the start of last season and it struck again. Of course, so did not having the right side of infield covered struck when Luke Voit hit a check-swing two-run single through the vacated right side. Then down to their last strike, Aaron Hicks hit the game-tying homer and an inning later (or the first overtime), the Yankees won it on a single by Gio Urshela and Mike Tauchman became a trivia answer as the first designated runner to score for the Yankees.
Game Five was the most intriguing from a pitching standpoint when the Yankees called up Deivi Garcia from witness protection (the alternate training site). Garcia did not disappoint, allowing an unearned run in six sharp innings and earning postgame praise from Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez.

Still the game went to overtime (the eighth inning) and Gary Sanchez won it with an historic grand slam that clanged off the left field bleachers in his own ballpark. It was historic because it was the first pinch hit grand slam in extra innings in Yankees’ history and surreal because it occurred as the Yankees serving as the visiting team and it took place in the eighth, which in any previous year would have been their penultimate turn at bat.
Then again nothing is normal, so of course some of these events would occur in this year because it’s 2020 — the year where you can hit a walk off homer as the home team in a road ballpark or an extra inning grand slam in the eighth.
